The first is a problem with the Album tag (@album) in the Tag from Filenames feature. The second caused the genre tag to sometimes be displayed as a number in iTunes.

The Tagger 1.3 Released

The Tagger 1.3 has been released. It is the first update for a few months and, accordingly, has a lot of new features and bug fixes. Please update your copy from The Tagger’s application menu, or download it if you haven’t tried it yet.

UI improvements include a new toolbar on the main window with convenient options for case transformation, navigating back and forward, using Discogs search, and displaying Quick Look. There also options for refreshing the file list and revealing a file in the Finder, which are not part of the default configuration but can be added by customizing the toolbar. The Tags menu has also been reorganised, with case transformation commands grouped by operation (Capitalize, Make Uppercase, &c.) rather than by tag.

The new back and forward commands, mentioned above as toolbar buttons, will make navigating between folders more convenient. Tags can also be edited ‘inline’, in the file list itself, by double-clicking on the relevant tag. All of the main tools in the Tags menu now have an All Tags option that applies to the full range of ID3 tags. Finally, the trial experience has been improved by removing the periodic alerts for unregistered users with a Purchase button in the top right hand corner of the title bar.

Bug fixes are as follows:

Fixed false error when saving AAC

Fixed AAC artwork memory leak bug

Fixed handling of Discogs’ new release URL format

Fixed Compilation switch bug

Fixed AAC album artist tag creation bug

Minor UI adjustments (Trim and Prefix & Suffix tools)

Requests for releases made using the new URL format specifying XML format (i.e. using the Discogs API) return a 404 error. The issue has been reported and will, I hope, be addressed soon by the Discogs staff.

Specifically, releases that are returned as search results in the Discogs feature (that is, those under the Releases header, not expanded as part of a Label or Artist) result in an error when loaded. The only workaround at the moment is to search for artists or labels and find releases that way, avoiding searching for releases directly by name. I apologise to anyone who has been affected by the issue.

New Site & Blog

Today I am proud to announce Deadbeat Software’s new web site and blog. The blog now uses the excellent Tumblr, and sports, along with the web site, a brand new, ultra-simple, single-column design. I hope that you like it.

Recent Updates

Over the last week or so, The Tagger 1.2 has been released, along with minor updates 1.2.1–1.2.3. If your copy hasn’t already asked you to update, you can update by choosing Check for Updates in the application’s menu.

The most significant new feature of version 1.2 is the Get Tags from Filenames feature, enabling tag values to be read from filenames using custom or preset formats. The other noticeable change is to allow the widths of the two halves of the window to be adjusted using a draggable bar (using an NSSplitView).

Some important bugs were fixed in the Discogs feature, including problems with artists’ pseudonyms and a particularly annoying bug that resulted in an error sheet being displayed over and over again. I apologise in particular to anyone unfortunate enough to have encountered that bug. Version 1.2.3 also stops disc titles from sometimes being treated as separate tracks in multi-disc releases.

Other changes include formatting track and disc numbers as 01, 02, etc. instead of 1, 2, 3 when renaming files, which is better for sorting. Also, when trying to rename a file using a format that contains a tag for which the file has no value, placeholders are now used—“Untitled” in place of a title tag, “Unknown” for other text tags, and “00” for track and disc numbers.
